WINDHOEK, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Namibia's 3X3 men's basketball team will take part in the international beach multi-sport event organized by the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC), the Beach Games slated for Doha, Qatar.

The team which is made up of four players departed on Wednesday for the Games which will officially be opened by the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on Oct. 12, said Jacobina Uushona, spokesperson for the Basketball Artists School (BAS).

Namibia will be in a pool of 16 male teams and 32 teams in total, including the female teams and the 3X3 games will commence on Sunday up until Wednesday, Oct. 16, she added.

Uushona said the Namibian team was selected from the Namibia Basketball Federation.

One of the players Firmino Bonaventure Mael prior to their departure said he was more than excited to be part of such history making.

"My team and I have received such great support from our chaperons and the Olympic Committee as well as our families and community," he said.

Speaking on behalf of the delegating team, Sylvia Sawahenga hopes that Namibia's presence at the Games will be a learning curve for the development of the sport in the country.

Meanwhile, the Namibian National Olympic Committee ensured the provision of all necessary equipment for the traveling team and fully supports them, she added.

The Games will be going on for a course of about seven days with an expected number of 1,240 athletes from over 100 countries and regions and 16 disciplines from 14 sports will be competed.
