BEIJING, May 9 (Xinhua) -- A national conference on public security was held earlier this week, calling for efforts to enhance the political loyalty of the country's police force, strengthen them through reform and technology, and run them with strict discipline.

Here are some highlights in the field since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in late 2012.

-- Being loyal to the Party. Police have adhered to the CPC's overall and absolute leadership over their work.

-- Implementing institutional reforms. The National Immigration Administration was established. Fire brigades were transferred to be governed by emergency management authorities.

-- Taking a fight against Yangtze River polluters. A multiple-department work mechanism was set up to focus on solving prominent issues threatening the Yangtze River, including illegal mining, fishing and waste disposal.

-- Creating a better environment for private businesses. Police units have worked to maintain fair and just rule-of-law environment, and improved services to help private enterprises grow.

-- Taking the lead to fight organized crime and gang-related activities.

-- Hitting hard on economic crime. A number of "tycoons" and "insiders" who made waves in the financial market were arrested, preventing and defusing serious financial risks.

-- Improving neighborhood police services. Efforts have been made at various community police stations to let people have easier access to police help when they need it.

-- Better performance in solving women and child trafficking cases with the establishment of DNA databases, systems to track missing children and special campaigns that strengthen regional or national collaboration.

-- Fighting telecom frauds with improved inter-department and inter-regional cooperation, systems to block fraudulent calls and freeze money transfers.

-- Simplifying the issuance of passports and other travel documents, saving applicants from making more than one trip. More than 99 percent of applicants expressed satisfaction over the procedure.

-- Cutting queuing time for Chinese citizens to cross the border at major land, sea and air ports.
