MELBOURNE, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- American Danielle Collins came out from nowhere to upset Sunday world No.2 Angelique Kerber in straight sets to storm into the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.

Before the start of the year, Collins had not won a single match at a Grand Slam tournament, but this time the 25-year-old made all the way to a 6-0, 6-2 win over the German.

With blistering speed around the court and precise power hitting, Collins blasted 29 winners past the experienced Wimbledon champion.

"I may not have won a Grand Slam match before this tournament, but I gotta tell you I think it's going to keep on happening," Collins said jokingly after the surprising performance.

"From the very first point, I showed her that I wasn't going to let her into the match, that I was going to dictate the entire way through."

"I stuck to my game plan. It clearly worked out well for me. Pretty much smooth sailing throughout the entire thing. I was just feeling really great."

When asked by reporters whether she expected to win the contest, Collins replied "honestly, I'm not surprised. I had some tough situations last year. Let's face it, I played Wozniacki first round at the French (Open). I played Mertens first round at Wimbledon, Sabalenka first round at the US Open. I lost to really good players. I had some opportunities in those matches to maybe have a different outcome," she explained.

In the quarterfinal stage of the tournament Collins will now take on the winner of Sunday night contest between Sloane Stephens and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
