SUVA, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Cyclone Season is from November to February in Vanuatu each year and the government is warning people about the importance of taking precautions immediately.

According to Vanuatu's Daily Post on Monday, Vanuatu's Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Forestry, Fisheries and Biosecurity (MALFFB) has issued a reminder to the public to remember to take precaution and to minimize losses of properties on farms with regards to crops and animals and homes during this period.

Vanuatu's Director of Agriculture and Rural Development Antoine Ravo advised on Monday home owners to cut off all branches of trees near houses and to strengthen all roof tops from being blown off.

Banana trees need to be supported and all banana trees which are ready and water taros which stand the risk of being washed away need to be harvested.

Farmers have been advised to plant new gardens of wild yams and sweet potatoes in safe areas away from flood waters.

Ravo said farmers needed to stock emergency food supplies in safe areas, harvest all fruits which are ready and to prepare seed banks.

Animals need to be moved to higher grounds and safe drinking water needs to be stored.

All farmers are encouraged to practise intercropping and not concentrate on one crop on the farm.

The Department of Fisheries called on all fishermen to listen to the radio for reports on the weather regarding strong winds and the sea.

Fishermen were also urged to fill their fishing boat or canoe with sea water to keep it from being blown away by strong winds.
