PYONGYANG, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the United States agreed Sunday to hold further negotiation for the second DPRK-U.S. summit at an early date.

Top DPRK leader Kim Jong Un and visiting U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made the pledge here to make the arrangement, DPRK's state-run news agency KCNA reported.

"There was an agreement on the issue of holding the working negotiation for the second DPRK-U.S. summit talks as early as possible, and relevant procedure-related issues and ways were also discussed," it said.

The talks were "productive and wonderful" at which mutual stands were fully understood and opinions exchanged, said the report.

Progress is being made in implementing the June 12 joint statement agreed upon at the first DPRK-U.S. summit held in Singapore, said Kim, expressing his gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump for making sincere effort to this end.

Kim also "expressed his will and conviction that a great progress would surely be made in solving the issues of utmost concern of the world" in the projected second DPRK-U.S. summit talks, according to the report.

Kim believed that the dialogue and negotiations between the DPRK and the United States based on the deep confidence between the top leaders of the two countries "would continue to develop favorably in the future."

Pompeo made a whirlwind visit to the DPRK for talks with Kim on the issues of denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula and the establishment of a peace regime.

The top U.S. diplomat, who flew to Pyongyang from Tokyo Sunday morning and left for Seoul later in the day, will travel to Beijing for talks with Chinese officials on Monday.
