UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations remains concerned over reports of continued violence in Syria's Idlib governorate causing civilian deaths and destruction of civilian infrastructure, a UN spokesperson said Monday.

"The United Nations strongly condemns attacks against civilians, aid workers and civilian and humanitarian infrastructure," said UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq.

He added the world body "continues to call on all parties, and those with influence over them, to ensure the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure in line with their obligations under international humanitarian law."

Lawlessness is on the rise in the main rebel stronghold in the northwestern governorate amid explosions and assassinations, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Two roadside bombs exploded in the countryside of Idlib on Saturday, leaving property losses, said the Britain-based watchdog, adding an explosion rocked a big checkpoint manned by militants in the town of Sarmin also in Idlib's countryside, causing injuries and damages.

Idlib has become the main destination for various militant groups, who evacuated from around Damascus and other areas after reaching deals with the Syrian army.

Meanwhile, Haq noted an estimated 45,000 to 50,000 internally displaced people, some 80 percent are believed to be women and children, live under difficult conditions in Rukban camp between Jordan and Syria, reportedly in need of water, hygiene, health, education aid and civil documentation.

The United Nations last delivered humanitarian assistance to the camp in January 2018.
