NAIROBI, April 1 (Xinhua) -- There is uncertainty among cricket stakeholders in Kenya after local media reported on Sunday that the government is set to disband Cricket Kenya (CK) and replace it with a caretaker committee.

The troubled association has been experiencing a lot of turbulence in the recent past, all of which came to a head after Kenya's dismal performance at the Under 18 Cricket World Cup held in New Zealand in January and the country's downgrading to ICC Division Three.

"I am not aware of the situation because I have not received any letter to give the order, but if it is true, why has the minister done that?" Palli Sehmi, the acting Chairperson of Cricket Kenya told Xinhua.

Cricket Kenya was brought to its knees in February following the resignation of chairperson Jackie Janmohammed and director of development, Abhijeet Raja Sarkar, a situation which was made worse by the non-cooperation of six non-elected members of CK.

Two former national team captains, Maurice Odumbe and Aasif Karim were also in the dark regarding the future of the association. "What we understand is that there is an impending move to take such action on Wednesday and the reporter who leaked the news must be privy to information," Odumbe said.

A senior officer at the Ministry of Sports, who requested anonymity, told Xinhua that Rashid Echesa, the Cabinet Secretary for Sports will indeed dissolve the association on Wednesday.

Kenya, once a legitimate candidate for Test status a decade ago, is now far away from 2003 when the country made history by becoming the first non-Test playing nation to reach the semi-finals of the Cricket World Cup.
