Trump vows 100-pct tariff on countries imposing digital services tax on U.S. companies

NEW YORK, June 26 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday threatened to impose a "100% TARIFF on any and all Goods" sent to the United States by any country that imposes a digital services tax on U.S. companies.

"This TARIFF will supersede Trade Deals made with the Country, whether implemented, signed, or not," Trump wrote in a social media post. And the "TARIFF will be immediately imposed, if they proceed."

"Numerous European Countries have been discussing the imminent implementation of a Digital Services Tax on American Companies," Trump said. "Some of these Countries are close to actually doing this."

Digital services taxes typically apply only to the world's largest and most established tech companies, like Meta, Alphabet and Amazon, all of which are U.S. firms. More than a dozen countries have imposed digital services taxes, local media reported Friday.

Trump earlier has vowed to retaliate against countries that impose digital services taxes, claiming they unfairly target U.S. tech giants.

In February, the Supreme Court struck down Trump's "reciprocal tariffs" that aimed to impose individualized tariff rates on almost all countries in the world under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Hours after the ruling, Trump signed an executive order imposing a new global 10-percent tariff under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974. But tariffs under this section can last for only 150 days.
