YANGON, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- More than 13.14 million people voted in Myanmar's multi-party democratic general election, representing a voter turnout of over 54 percent, Zaw Min Tun, leader of the Information Team of Myanmar's National Defense and Security Council, said late Monday.

Myanmar held the election in three phases: the first phase took place on Dec. 28 last year, the second on Jan. 11 this year, and the third on Jan. 25.

The election was conducted in 263 of the country's 330 townships. More than 24.2 million people were eligible to vote in the general election, Zaw Min Tun said.

The election covered 263 constituencies for the lower house; 73 constituencies under the first-past-the-post (FPTP) system and 26 constituencies under the proportional representation (PR) system for the upper house; 255 constituencies under the FPTP system and 42 constituencies under the PR system for the region and state parliaments; as well as 29 ethnic constituencies for the region and state parliaments, he said.

During the election period, more than 30 townships across various regions and states experienced attacks involving mines, explosives, and vehicle obstructions, he noted. As a result, two civil servants were killed and nine others, including civilians, were injured, he said. Despite these challenges, security forces, election officials, and voters were able to conduct the polls successfully, he added.

The government expressed its gratitude to all organizations and personnel involved in organizing and supporting the election, he added.
