DAR ES SALAAM, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's Zanzibar is stepping up efforts to explore and develop its mineral resources following encouraging preliminary studies that indicate the presence of strategic mineral deposits, a senior official said on Saturday.
Ali Hassan Mrisho, head of the Mineral Division in Zanzibar's Ministry of Water, Energy and Minerals, said initial geological surveys have revealed promising signs of heavy mineral sands, including ilmenite and zircon, which hold significant economic value.
Speaking at the launch of the 7th Tanzania Mining and Investment Conference (TMIC 2026) in Dar es Salaam, Mrisho said Zanzibar is working closely with the Geological Survey of Tanzania (GST) to unlock its mineral potential.
Mrisho noted that the upcoming advanced exploration phase will be conducted in line with sustainable development principles, aiming to ensure that resource development benefits both the economy and local communities.
He emphasized that the government views the mining sector as a key driver of economic growth and investment, adding that Zanzibar is positioning itself to attract investors once comprehensive studies are completed. ■
