NEW YORK, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Spain's 1-0 win over Uruguay on Friday night in Guadalajara (Mexico) has come at a high injury cost with winger Yeremy Pino's tournament over after suffering a fractured collar bone, while Nico Williams could also be on the sidelines for a considerable length of time with a muscle injury.
Pino suffered his injury after a bad challenge from Uruguay's Brian Rodriguez in the closing minutes of an increasingly bad-tempered game and speaking afterwards, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente commented that, "unfortunately, it could be a shoulder or collarbone injury."
"He'll have tests done tomorrow (Saturday) to see the extent of the injury. He's suffering a lot; he's made an enormous effort," said De la Fuente, who said Pino's decision to stay on the pitch after suffering his injury "a heroic feat."
Williams suffered his probable groin injury in added time after a vicious tackle from behind from Nicolas de la Cruz and he will have tests in the coming hours.
The Athletic Bilbao winger's injury is all the more worrying as it comes after a season ruined by a long-standing groin problem and a torn hamstring that meant he missed the last month of the La Liga season.
The injuries rob Spain of two of the four specialist wingers De la Fuente has taken to the World Cup and that is a big problem as newly-signed Liverpool player Victor Munoz hasn't played at all after arriving at the World Cup with a calf problem.
Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino also travelled to the World Cup with hardly any competitive minutes after suffering an ankle injury in February, but he managed 60 minutes on Friday. ■
