CONAKRY, June 14 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix on Saturday praised Guinea's efforts in contributing to peace operations around the world, particularly in Africa.
During a working visit to Guinea, Lacroix and the delegation accompanying him were received by Guinean authorities led by Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Integration and Guineans Abroad Morissanda Kouyate.
The two sides exchanged views on issues related to peace and stability around the world, as well as Guinea's contribution to international peace efforts through the deployment of Guinean contingents to United Nations peace missions.
The UN envoy also carried a message from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres addressed to Guinean President General Mamady Doumbouya. In the message, the UN chief congratulated the Guinean president on the efforts made to promote peace and stability in the country.
"Guinea has done a lot for us. It has done a great deal for the United Nations in general and for peace," Lacroix said.
According to him, Guinea has paid a heavy price for peace operations through the sacrifices made by its defense forces.
"We will examine what more we can continue to accomplish together in order to further strengthen our cooperation in the field of peace," he added.
On behalf of the Guinean government, Foreign Minister Morissanda Kouyate recalled the reforms undertaken and the efforts made by his country to maintain and strengthen its participation in peace operations around the world.
He also praised the support provided by the United Nations to Guinea since the country's accession to the international organization. ■
