BUDAPEST, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Monday warned that the European Union's plan to admit Ukraine by 2030 would force the bloc into a war with Russia.

"Dark clouds are gathering over Europe. Brussels is preparing for war with Russia, and they already have a target date for entering the conflict: 2030," Orban said in a post on social media platform X.

The aim of the rearmament program launched by Brussels is for the "Union to be ready for war by 2030," the same year targeted for Ukraine's "accelerated EU accession," he said.

Orban noted that admitting a country already in armed conflict could have immediate security implications for member states, citing provisions in EU treaties on mutual assistance.

The prime minister said that such decisions would shape Europe's security environment for years ahead and warned that Hungary's 2026 parliamentary election could be the last in which the country is able to influence its position on war-and-peace questions.

"All this means that next year's Hungarian election may be the last in which we can truly decide between war and peace," Orban stated. "If we make the wrong choice in 2026, by the next election in 2030 it will be too late to correct it."

Orban concluded that the coming years will be decisive for Hungary and called for maintaining what he described as a pro-peace stance. ■
