LIMA, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Peru's Congress voted late Thursday to open debate on impeaching President Dina Boluarte, citing her incapacity to curb rising crime across the country.
Lawmakers quickly approved the motions and summoned Boluarte to defend herself before Congress at 11:30 p.m. local time Thursday (0430 GMT Friday).
The vote came just hours after a shooting at a concert at Lima's Military Circle, which fueled public outrage over surging crime in the nation.
Political tensions have mounted as several parties that previously supported Boluarte have now backed her removal.
Boluarte's lawyer, Juan Carlos Portugal, dismissed speculation about a possible resignation, noting that the president "remains calm and in constant contact with her ministers." ■
