SARAJEVO, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Poland beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 89-67 on Thursday in the opening game of the 2025 IWBF European Wheelchair Basketball Championship.

Poland raced into a 51-25 lead by halftime, while Bosnia narrowed the gap in the third quarter but failed to mount a serious challenge.

The Division A championship is taking place at the Hotel Hills Arena in Bosnia's capital Sarajevo from October 9 to 18.

The continent's top male and female wheelchair basketball players are competing for qualification berths at the 2026 World Championships in Ottawa, Canada.

Alaga Pasic, president of the Bosnian Wheelchair Basketball Federation, said at the opening ceremony that it was an honor for Bosnia to host the tournament, adding that this year marks three decades of organized wheelchair basketball in the country. ■
