MADRID, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Although La Liga has confirmed that the game between Villarreal and FC Barcelona scheduled for December 20 will be played in Miami, there is still opposition to the plan from supporters' groups, other clubs and players.
Real Madrid opposes the idea because it changes what should be a difficult away game for Barcelona into one played in a stadium where the vast majority of supporters will cheer for Barcelona, and the opposition seems to have another ally in Barcelona midfielder, Frenkie de Jong.
Speaking in a press conference while playing with the Dutch national team, De Jong was asked about the game in Miami and his answer was clear.
"I don't like us playing there, and I don't agree with this. It's not fair for the competition," replied De Jong, who highlighted the extra demands two 10-hour flights would make on the players.
"I don't think it's right for the players; we always complain about the match schedule and the excessive travel," he added.
The midfielder tried to take the point of view of Villarreal and Barcelona, who will earn extra money from the game, saying it was "about expanding their brands globally. That's probably what it's all about. I understand the position, but I wouldn't accept it, and I don't share it. I understand that other clubs don't agree."
Speaking on Spanish radio station Cadena Ser, Spain national team goalkeeper Unai Simon, who plays for Athletic Bilbao in club football, said he would be against taking any of his club's league matches to another country.
"If you took an Athletic home game away and we had to play without our fans against Barcelona, I think that would harm my club and adulterate the competition," he commented. ■
