Indonesia tightens crackdown on university radicalism following deadly terrorist attacks

JAKARTA, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian President Joko Widodo said on Thursday that the government is considering rules to block the penetration of extremism teaching, particularly among university students.

The move came on the ground that many perpetrators of recent suicide attacks were university students and the police even recovered bombs in a compound of a campus in Riau province.

"Should such regulations be badly needed, we will set them up. Now they are being studied by the high education ministry," Widodo said in West Java province.

Notwithstanding the crackdown, Widodo was adamant that it would not disturb the educational process, as was the concerned of some community members.

Indonesia has long battled Islamic militancy, who carried out a series of attacks including the 2002 Bali bombing that killed over 200 people, most of them foreign holiday makers.

The most recent suicide attacks in Surabaya city of East Java and Riau province left dozens dead or injured.?
