Macron's approval ratings hit new setback as first anniversary nears

PARIS, April 18 (Xinhua) -- French President Emmanuel Macron's approval ratings were hit by a fresh decline in April as his package of reforms to transform the country fell short to win public support, a survey showed on Wednesday.

An ifop poll for Paris Match magazine Radio Sud and news channel Cnews said Macron collected 58 percent of negative rating as his first anniversary in power is approaching amid persistent social roar.

Having won a May election with 66.1 percent of the votes on a reformist project to modernize eurozone's second leading power, Macron vowed to serve the country well and bring change after he had shaken the country's political landscape.

A year on, he changed labor code, proposed new education system and planned to reform rail sector and institutions that have brought workers and students out in protests.

According to the survey's data, more than half of respondents believe that Macron has kept his campaign promises, a score higher than that obtained by his predecessors, Jacques Chirac, Nicolas Sarkozy or Francois Hollande at the same time of their mandate.

Ifop poll questioned 1,201 respondents on April 12-16 after the 40-year-old head of state had given two TV interviews to defend reforms.
