BRUSSELS, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Belgium has the worst results for drunk driving, according to a major study by the European Road Safety Users Survey (ESRA) conducted in 38 countries worldwide, and released on Monday by local press in Belgium.

At the level of driving under the influence of alcohol, the results clearly showed that the outcome in Belgium is worse than all the other countries surveyed, with more than 43 percent of Belgians admitting to driving under the influence at least once in the last 12 months.

"Many in this country have not yet grasped the extent of the problem of drinking and driving," explains Benoit Godart, the spokesman for Vias, the Belgian Institute for Road Safety, whose objective is not only to improve road safety, but also mobility and safety in general.

A total of 38,798 people were surveyed for the ESRA study, over 1,000 of which were individuals from Belgium. Those interviewed included motorists, bikers, cyclists and pedestrians. The Vias Institute participated in the study by drawing up the questionnaire for Belgium.
