Myanmar calls for building good labor relationship

YANGON, March 9 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's Yangon Region Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein has called for building good relationship between employers and employees for solving labor dispute rather than resorting to settlement by using force, the official Global New Light of Myanmar reported Friday.

To ensure development of the private sector and foreign investment promotion, employers and employees need to build such good relationship, U Phyo Min Thein made the remarks at a meeting between Vice President U Myint Swe and entrepreneurs in Yangon.

"The Yangon region government has solved many problems between employers and employees. Unless the problems and disputes are dealt with immediately, they can create chaos and instability," he said.

Reporting on some labor strikes in some industrial zones, representatives of two industry-related associations said the strikes were creating economic and social chaos with laborers even threatening co-workers, who did not join them, with physical violence, adding that it can harm productivity, delay shipments and result in the suspension of purchase orders.

The associations called for prompt government action in line with the existing laws, asking the government to issue a directive on the employment contract for it to be made adaptable to the work environment in line with the laws.

Labor disputes mostly happen in foreign-owned factories in Myanmar with the absence of labor union organizations there rather than domestic ones.
